Leaving Google
After 6 years I have decided to make a change. I have resigned from Google and this Friday is my last day. Next Monday, I’m starting a new gig at Credit Karma (www.creditkarma.com), a fintech company. I’ll be using my experience, gained in Developer Relations to develop a DevRel org within Credit Karma.
I will still be in the Bay Area — just working in SF.
Questions I have been asked:
Q: Why would you ever leave Google?
A: I am an explorer — it took me 6 years but I feel I have explored the interesting bits to my satisfaction. My desire to experience the unfamiliar overrides my need feel comfortable.
Q: Are you still going to be working in the Game Industry?
A: Nope. I have seen how the sausage is made. I am going back into enterprise for a while. I will still be playing a lot of games and I am happy to advise on game industry things.
Q: Why fintech?
A: It feels like the right thing to move toward in the current economic setting of the world. I was in talks with multiple companies over the past three months and had the opportunity to gather information about many tech verticals. I fear a recession is on the horizon and feel that being “close to the money” is a good strategy to weather the storm.
Q: Why Credit Karma?
A: Ultimately, the friendly folks at Credit Karma won me over with their positive people first attitude, best in class engineering talent (lots of ex-Googlers, ex-Twitter folk there) and the opportunity to develop my career that I was not going to get at Google.
Q: What will you be doing at Credit Karma?
A: I have been hired as an engineering manager. I will be working with leadership in developing the company’s strategy for working with the engineering component of the fintech industry and then growing a team to fulfil that strategy.
I have had an amazing time at Google. It’s a mind boggling mecha of talent and tech. I have made many friends that I will carry forward in my life and personally developed in positive ways I don’t think would have been possible elsewhere. I am as they say, uncomfortably excited.
Googlers, stay googley.
